Housing Upgrades Millennials Don’t Care For

    July 24, 2020

    Man and Woman in kitchen

Millennials are a big part of the current housing market. But as a digital, pet-loving, less formal generation, millennials have different requirements for their homes than other generations. And as a homebuilder, it’s essential you understand what this demographic is looking for! Even more essential is understanding what millennials don’t want in their home.

    Formal Dining Rooms

Big, formal dining rooms that were all the rage for generations past are not appealing to millennials—at all. This space for formal meals with fancy china and tablecloths is a complete waste of space for millennials. While they are known for their love of cooking, millennials prefer to eat in, or closer to, the kitchen where they are preparing meals. They also appreciate a more open concept encouraging energetic socialization. So when you’re designing with this generation in mind, it is better to think of breakfast bars with stools or nooks in the kitchen—and skip the stuffier spaces.

    Game/Memorabilia Rooms

Game rooms often feature pool tables and spaces to showcase memorabilia and other prized possessions. Millennials, however, aren’t known for having a lot of possessions and they certainly don’t want to display what they do have. Millennials are much more of a digital generation. When designing spaces for this demographic, think more about media rooms with big screen TVs, strong speaker systems and charging stations instead of traditional game areas with memorabilia spaces.

    Carpeting

Carpeting used to be all the rage. Gone are those days, however. Millennials are ditching the plush carpets for bare floors—wood, tile, and even cement—and large accent rugs. As pet lovers, millennials find bare floors to be much more pet friendly than carpets. Carpets collect fur, dander, and odors while bare floors are easier to keep clean.

Keeping your audience in mind as you build is incredibly important. If you’re targeting a younger demographic with your homes, the above tips should be kept in mind as you design your next set of floor plans.
